The cause of death was unknown, but when the Japanese couple died their son was taken by the Vescovo church and he was raised by nuns. The Catholics changed his Japanese name, Hakkai, to Gino, but left him with his parent’s family name. Gino Cho spent most of his time learning as much as he could. He was very quiet and a little anti-social, but soon actually grew to like teaching others. He did make one friend. On Sundays, much to the annoyance of the nuns, Gino had a habit of wondering off to a quiet corner of the church to read. A kid his age, Neroli Vescovo, ran into him and started bugging him. Gino soon realized that reading and ignoring Neroli wasn’t going to make him go away and so Gino took to talking with Neroli every Sunday while everyone else was in church. Then, one Sunday, when Gino was eleven, Neroli didn’t show up. And he never came to the church again. Gino found out later that the other boy had been banished from the Vescovo family. He hoped to meet him again, but never did. When he came of age to leave the orphanage, he looked for jobs teaching and found a job tutoring the children of some higher ranking Vescovo. He still comes to the church to teach the orphans, his own tithe back to the church. It’s this way that he met Ciro Sanzo. He got along well with the priest, much better than he’d gotten along with clergy before. They would talk about philosophy or the news or any other topic when they could get some time sharing tea or a meal. He’s living comfortably in the home of the family he tutors for.
